Where does astaxanthin come from?

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid produced by the marine algae Haematococcus pluvialis when it is exposed to stressful conditions. Essentially, astaxanthin is meant to act as a shield and protect the algae from environmental pressures such as ultra-violet light, a lack of nutrition or a change in temperature.

Further along the food chain, other species such as salmon and pink flamingos acquire astaxanthin through their diet, giving them its distinctive colour.
